Antique salt bag (namakdan) by the Bakhtiari nomads of the Chahar Mahal region of Persia.
Circa 1920.
This salt bag is tightly woven using soumak technique to the face the design to the front is of a large medallion note the small animals decorating the neck and base of the salt bag. The back is in plain weave with a small tribal design in the lower righthand corner. These bags were used by the nomads to carry rock salt both for personal use and for their animals; a very precious commodity. The salt bag is in excellent original condition and shows slight signs of tribal use it would make a wonderful wall hanging.
