Antique salt bag (namakdan) by the Baluch nomads of the Sistan region south-western Afghanistan.
Circa 1900/20.
This salt bag is tightly woven using weft float brocade technique the design to the front and reverse are similar with a simple medallion design this is also repeated on the neck of the bag. Note the large original tassels decorating the sides of the bag. These bags were used by the nomads to carry rock salt both for personal use and for their animals; a very precious commodity. The salt bag is in excellent original condition and shows some signs of tribal use it would make a wonderful wall hanging.
