Antique Afghan Qarqeen Turkmen prayer rug with unusual mosque design. 

Circa 1920. 

A very interesting small prayer rug by the Turkmen people settled around the town of Qarqeen in Northern Afghanistan near to the border with Southern Turkmenistan. The rug has all natural dyes and a very soft madder red ground with an almost abstract image of a mosque. The border designs are typical of the Qarqeen Turkmen. The rug is woven on an undyed ivory wool foundation and retains the short kilim end finishes at both ends. The rug is in excellent condition with very slight wear and good pile. The rug is suitable for light domestic use.
