Antique salt bag by the Tartar nomads of Uzbekistan / northern Afghanistan.

Circa 1900.

Salt bags by the Uzbek nomads are quite scarce they were used to store rock salt to be given to their animals during the migration. This example has the diamond design to the face and also to the neck and a very similar design to the reverse. The appearance is that of an abstract art form. Note the fine bands of weft work decoration at the top of the neck and across the shoulders. There are the remains of tassels or tufts to the edges. The salt bag is in excellent condition with some signs of tribal use. The bag has been hand washed and is ready for display.
