Antique salt bag by the Turkmen tribes of northern Afghanistan. 

Circa 1920. 

Salt bags by the Turkmen are quite scarce they were used to store rock salt to be given to their animals during the migration. This example has the Tekke Turkmen gul to the face and traditional Turkmen designs to the neck. The back is a striped plain weave. Note the decorative tassels all along the base of the bag. The salt bag is in excellent condition with some signs of tribal use. The bag has been hand washed and is ready for display.
