Size: 1ft 10in x 1ft 3in (57 x 37cm). Antique salt bag (namakdan) by the Turkmen nomads of northern Afghanistan. Circa 1900/20. This salt bag is tightly woven using weft float brocade technique the design to the front has a lot of Turkmen design influences. The back is plain weave ivory white. These bags were used by the nomads to carry rock salt both for personal use and for their animals; a very precious commodity. The salt bag is in excellent original condition and shows some signs of tribal use it would make a wonderful wall hanging. Stock Number: MS5-06.
