Antique Caucasian Shirvan Baku rug with a scarce variant of the Surahani garden design.
Circa 1880.
A very good example of a Shirvan-Baku rug with a scarce design from the villages of Northeast of Baku in the Eastern Caucasus. This example has four square / pointed medallions in alternating red and white. An outstanding feature of this rug is the main ivory ground border with a repeat design also in red and blue. I have been unable to find a published example of this border although related examples are found on rugs from the Kuba region. The rug is in excellent condition with even wear and medium pile The rug retains the original end finishes at both ends. The rug is suitable for light domestic use. The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.
