Antique salt bag by the Timuri / Baluch nomads of western Afghanistan. 

Circa 1900. 

This salt bag is tightly woven using weft float brocade technique the design to the front is fine bands of intricate design and reverse has a banded design. The salt bag uses a very limited but subtle colour palette typical of the Timuri. These bags were used by the nomads to carry rock salt both for personal use and for their animals; a very precious commodity. The salt bag is in excellent original condition and shows some signs of tribal use it would make a wonderful wall hanging.
