Pirot kilims are also known as Sarkoy or Sharkoy they originate from the town of Pirot in south-eastern Serbia; where they have been made since the middle ages. The popular design style has spread across the Balkan region and into western Turkey. These are outstanding furnishing kilims with a very unique style in a wide range of designs and colours. This example is of a flowering tree design on a warm red ground framed by ivory with flowering shrubs. The border is of a simple classic design on a dark charcoal ground and frames the kilim very well. The weave is typically fine and tight. A superb example with a simple but unusual design. Very good condition with slight wear. Suitable for normal domestic use. Hand washed and ready for use.
