Size: 6ft 0in x 4ft 8in (184 x 141cm).
A very good old South Caucasian Shirvan rug with a design inspired by kilims from the Kuba region.
About 30 years old.
A superb example of Shirvan village weaving rich natural colours and hand-spun wool. This rug was purchased in Azerbaijan about 15 years ago from weavers who had a small but very high quality weaving workshop. The design is usually found on kilims from the Kuba region but there are also some piled examples known that date to the late 19th century. The rug offered here is very similar to the example published by Ian Bennett in Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian plate 248 page 203. The weavers may in fact have been inspired by this image. The rug is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and good pile. The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display. The rug is suitable for normal domestic use. A scarce example of modern Shirvan weaving of the highest quality.
