Antique Tekke Turkmen 'Kizil' chuval with a traditional banded design in mixed techniques.

Circa 1880.

Chuval are storage bags used by the Turkmen nomads for the storage of personal items inside the yurt and also for the transport of goods on the backs of camels or horses. They were usually woven in pairs. 'kizil' translates to red; these chuval are associated with weddings and formed part of the brides dowry, they were prized possessions and passed down through the

family.

This example is of classic design with very fine decorated bands in pile and flatweave on a madder red ground. These are considered to be the finest knotting of all Tekke weavings. At some time in it's history the back has been removed.

The chuval face is in fair condition with light even wear, there are some small historic areas of staining from tribal use.
