Antique Ersari Turkmen germech with star design.

Circa 1890.

This is a very scarce Turkmen weaving, it is believed that germech were hung across the entrance to the tribal yurt in the door way below the ensi at ground level. The purpose was to stop dirt and dust blowing into the yurt and also to prevent small animals entering. Very few of these have survived and rarely come to the market.

This example by the Ersari Turkmen has a visually exciting design of eight stars within octagons. The germech retains its original short kilim at the lower end.

The germech is in good condition with even wear and medium pile, there are traces of some old moth damage and a few very small holes.

This is a collectible Turkmen weaving that will display very well.
